OUR SERVICES

A little bit about what we do.

  • Conditions Seen

We realize that there is a tremendous need for neurologic care among those in the North State and we are committed to do our best in serving as many people as possible.  We review every referral request personally to ensure that our providers have the special expertise and accessibility to best meet your need.  We also continue to expand access through collaborating with other neuroscience professionals regionally and through a tele-health format.

We are fortunate to have excellent neuroscience providers with fellowship training in electrophysiology,  neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and certification in multiple sclerosis care.

    Common conditions treated include:

Evaluation of complaints of limb pain, numbness and weakness, dizziness, balance difficulties and spells.

Neuromuscular conditions such as amyotrophyic lateral sclerosis (ALS); peripheral neuropathy/CIDP/Guillian Barre syndrome, Myasthenia gravis, muscle disorders

    Multiple sclerosis

    Movement disorders

    Restless legs

    Headache

    Memory disorders

    Epilepsy and seizures

Post hospital care for stroke, brain hemorrhage, TIA depending on need

    Brain tumors

Therapeutic botulium injections directed at variety of conditions including chronic migraine, cervical dystonia, spasticity, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, hyperhydrosis, excessive drooling.

If you have any questions about our services, please contact us and we'd be happy to answer them!

  • Neurologic consultation and treatment

We desire to partner with our patients, family members, and their care teams providing insight and recommendations along the journey of their neurologic condition.  We provide services both in person as well as virtual visits for patient convenience and improved access.  We additionally believe in a “center without walls” approach, which consists of maximizing referral networks and multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals.

  • Nerve conduction studies/electromyography studies (NCS/EMG)

Dr. Garnaas is the only neuromuscular/EMG fellowship trained neurologist in the region and brings with her a depth of clinical experience to help identify the cause of patient’s symptoms affecting their nerves and muscles.  NCS/EMG studies can be ordered by your provider separately or coupled with consultation.  To learn more about this study and what to expect, click here.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)

In addition to providing clinical consultations, we offer local providers the ability to directly order routine and sleep deprived EEGs to assist them in the evaluation of spells, seizures and syncope.  We are proud to partner with University of California Davis epilepsy specialists for the interpretation of our 72 hour ambulatory EEG studies which enables us to perform longer duration studies in patient’s homes to further clarify and capture spells. • Deep brain stimulation and other forms of neuromodulation

Neuromodulation devices alter nerve activity within the brain through targeted electrical stimulation to specific neurologic sites in the body.   These devices are used to restore neural balance caused by a disease process and improve function when medical therapies are failing.  Examples of the neuromodulation devices that our providers manage include deep brain stimulation used for management of Parkinson’s and tremor control as well as vagal nerve stimulators and responsive neurostimulators, both of which are used in the management of treatment resistant epilepsy.

  • Botulinum Toxin Injections

Our providers have extensive experience performing botulinum toxin (Botox/Xeomin) injections directed at the treatment of chronic migraine, spasticity and a variety of movement disorders including spasmodic torticollis, blepharospasm, writer’s cramp, facial and limb dystonia.  This therapy can be life changing and significantly improve one’s quality of life when performed by someone skilled in this technique.  Treatment of these medical conditions is typically covered by your insurance and assurance of coverage will be determined ahead of time.  Schedule a consultation to learn more about this treatment possibility.

  • Superficial Skin Biopsies

Small fiber neuropathies are a common cause of painful nerve pain and autonomic dysfunction but they can be difficult to detect with routine nerve conduction studies. Providers at Catalyst Neuromedical Center offer superficial skin punch biopsies, which can count the density of the small nerve fibers within the skin and detect this form of nerve dysfunction leading to a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • Other studies that may be ordered from CNC include the following

EEG (electroencephalography):  An EEG is a test that measures electrical activity in your brain using small surface electrodes on your scalp.  This study is one of the main diagnostic tests for epilepsy and can also play a role in diagnosing other brain disorders.

MRI/CT:  These are specialized imaging studies used for visualization of the brain, spinal column and other areas of the nervous system.  MRI is also frequently used in monitoring disease activity in multiple sclerosis and its response to treatment.

Lumbar puncture:  Lumbar puncture is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the spinal fluid for signs of increased pressure, inflammation or infection within the central nervous system.  This outpatient procedure involves removing a small amount of spinal fluid for laboratory testing using a small needle inserted between two vertebrae in your lower back.  Though lumbar punctures are generally regarded as a very safe procedure, they do carry some risks of post lumbar puncture headache, brief back or leg discomfort or bleeding near the puncture site.  Please make sure you inform your doctor of any use of blood thinners as they often need to be discontinued temporarily prior to this procedure.
